Statement of Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples of Canada

The discovery of an unmarked gravesite with the remains of 215 children at the site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School has once again challenged us to confront a nation’s past in which innocent lives were stolen from their families and communities.

We grieve with the Tk’emlúps te Secwepémc and other Indigenous Peoples who endure the irreplaceable losses of lives taken from them, and offer our deepest condolences.

As an organization, Initiatives for Just Communities is committed to the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which guides us with a framework for reconciliation.  We continue to support the call for renewed commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice.

Within our organization, we will continue to build cultural safety in consultation with Indigenous Peoples and renew our ongoing efforts to promote cultural awareness.
